GIVING
There are number of areas to which you can financially designate your gift to The Pilot School. Robust support in each area plays a critical role in our ability to support each student and their families.
Gifts to the Annual Fund ease the gap between actual operating costs of the school and tuition revenue, allowing us to maintain and improve the building and classrooms, incorporate new technology, programs, materials, and to support faculty salaries and benefits. Our Tuition Aid fund enables Pilot to allocate tuition assistance to qualified families who would not otherwise be able to afford the tuition cost. Our Planned Giving Program allows Pilot to receive planned and deferred gifts that may also offer tax advantages to those who want to invest in Pilot’s future. The Endowment for The Pilot School enhances our long-term stability and financial viability. Gifts to our endowment benefit today’s students and lay the foundation for a well-managed, secure institutional future, which will aid in our ability to help every future Pilot student.
The Pilot School is a non-profit 501c3 corporation and all gifts to the school are tax-deductible. Donations may be made by check, credit card, or through the transfer of stocks and securities. Our tax ID # is 51-0080692.

A planned gift is any gift that is carefully designed to maximize a donor’s financial and estate plans while, at the same time, supporting the long-term financial stability of an institution through endowment. Planned gifts can take a variety of forms.
Gifts from Wills
The simplest planned gift is a bequest, which is the inclusion of The Pilot School in your will. The following are examples of how you may choose to include The Pilot School in your will and specific language you may choose to achieve your giving goal.
Naming The Pilot School as a beneficiary of a specific amount from your estate with the following statement.
“I give and devise to The Pilot School, Inc. the sum of $_________ to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program).”
A residual bequest comes to us after your estate expenses and specific bequests are paid:
“I give and devise to The Pilot School, Inc. all (or name a percentage) of the rest, residue, remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program.)”
The Pilot School can be named as a contingent beneficiary in your will or personal trust if one or more of your specific bequests cannot be fulfilled:
If (insert a name) is not living at the time of my demise, I give and devise to The Pilot School, Inc. the sum of $______ (or all or a percentage of the residue of my estate) to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program).
You may name The Pilot School as a beneficiary of your IRA or other qualified retirement benefits. Donors should consult with their tax advisor regarding the tax benefits of such gifts. By naming The Pilot School as a beneficiary of a retirement plan (401(k), 403(b), IRA, Keogh or profit-sharing pension plan), the donor maintains complete control over the asset while living, but at the donor’s death the plan passes to support The Pilot School free of both estate and income taxes.
Making a charitable gift from your retirement plan is easy and should not cost you any attorney fees. Simply request a change-of-beneficiary form from your plan administrator. When you have finished, please return the form to your plan administrator and notify The Pilot School.
Gifts from Retirement Plans
Making a gift to Pilot from your retirement plans offers you flexibility to change beneficiaries if your family needs change, helps your heirs avoid potential double taxation on your retirement account, and lets you continue to take regular lifetime withdrawals.
Through this mode of giving, you name The Pilot School as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or other qualified retirement plan and the balance comes to our school as a gift. Please let The Pilot School know you have made this arrangement. Your plan administrator is not obligated to notify us we may not know if you do not tell us.
Gifts from Life Insurance
Making a gift to Pilot from a life insurance policy which you and your family no longer need, enables you to support our school while you receive an income tax deduction equal to the cash surrender value of the policy. You simply transfer the ownership of a paid up life insurance policy to The Pilot School.
Other Planned Gifts
There are many additional forms of planned gifts, such as life-Income gifts, charitable gift annuities, deferred gift annuities, charitable remainder annuity trusts, charitable lead trusts, and more. Please contact our Development Office if you would like to discuss alternate giving options.
The Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is an excellent way for donors age 70 ½ and older to show support for The Pilot School and receive tax benefits in return. As you plan your required minimum distributions (RMD), consider using your IRA account to make the most of your charitable giving. You receive a tax benefit even if you take the standard deduction!

Gifts of Stock or Appreciated Securities
By gifting stock or appreciated securities to Pilot, you receive an immediate income tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities on the date of the transfer. This is particularly attractive if you paid significantly less for the stock than its current value as you pay no capital gains tax on the transfer when the stock is sold. Giving appreciated stock can be more beneficial for you than giving cash.

The endowment for The Pilot School enhances our long-term stability and financial viability. Gifts to our endowment benefit today’s students and lay the foundation for a well-managed, secure institutional future, which will aid in our ability to help every future Pilot student.
Inspired by the conviction that our mission begins and ends with the child, The Pilot School’s trustees are committed to increasing the school’s tuition aid so that a family whose child requires Pilot’s curriculum can receive the educational value the school offers.
The Pilot School provides evidence-based intervention to children with average to above-average intellectual potential who are underachieving as a result of learning differences. We do so regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Parents do not elect to send their child to Pilot because they can afford to pay tuition costs. Rather, these parents are compelled to consider Pilot because of their child’s learning challenges. While any family may apply for tuition assistance, grants are based on need and determined on a case-by-case basis.
For sixty five years, The Pilot School has earned the confidence and generosity of hundreds of donors who have viewed their gifts as a meaningful investment in a respected and successful educational organization. To continue to invest in the school’s future, The Pilot School offers a planned giving program that helps its friends and supporters achieve their goals of assisting The Pilot School while generating tax advantages for themselves and their families.
